Positions through contextualising: week one + two

For Contextualising, I didn’t know exactly where to start. I was a little bit anxious about having to choose a position that could potentially put me in a spot where I was unable to crawl out of if I hated it or if it failed.

I initially presented a few ideas, I was wondering if I could make graphics via screen printing that seemed odd, off-putting; the contents of which would have a political message or undertone. I wanted to explore how the uncanny could visually aid what is on the page.

Another idea that I had was to create publications with falsehoods that were so blatantly absurd that you knew that they were lying to you—yet, via the process of publications you have to trust them. My inspiration for this were a few films wherein the main character interacts with a publication has surreal or absurd content—The Shining, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Eyes Wide Shut.

Ultimately, I decided on making a book of moments from films that I felt the uncanny in watching and juxtaposed the “real” of that film vs the fantasy or dream.
